You can tell seasoned hares - they know how to set A to A runs without your being able to guess where the onin is, and they know how to find new bars. In this instance the new bar was the Grass Roots Tavern, tucked away on the south side of St. Mark's place, with plenty of space, cheap beer and a hungry cat on the counter who Ewuska (anybody heard of her? Pronounced A woosh ka) kept running after all night, obviously trying to get away from her.
You can tell Roy and Eva - they only set trails in the squiggly streeted nether regions of the village where it is very easy to get lost. That's the problem with seasoned hashers - anything else is the b word. Well, showing great ingenuity, and respect for my born and bred and hence already wasted New York ears, they did not finish in the Blind Tiger, nowhere near it, although they did manage to get the pack to fan out over a good deal of territory for at least two checks - one near the old St. Patrick's and the other on the corner of one of those windy streets pretty far west. Trail then came across Prince Street, allowing me to find two new restaurants (one of which actually remained in place when I went looking for it later although the crowds were truly forbidding), and then the best part - through the bright lights and back streets of SOHO. SO three cheers to Ewuska, Eroyka, and I don't know who the second one is (the latter of course being the third). Just in case the new snowflake atop seems a little weird, I had to go all over the Bahamas looking for it.
