This was a run, I stress run, I remeber. The most lovely squiggles
everywhere right in (western) midtown defying all those that think they're good
enough to play the shortcut game, and even some of them who are not. I started
late, witnessing a bit of bag/cab confusion - the cabdriver got the right idea -
Geoff was not a bag, so he did not have to come back for him, and marvelled
deeply a) at seeing our priest ever again, b) at learning he had been skiing
earlier that day but it wasn't enough for him and he just remembered it was an
alternate Winter Wednesday (after possibly more than a year) - I'm not trying to
be mean, sometimes it comes naturally, but most importantly,c) by the time I
arrived late and without shortcutting at Columbus Circle, there he was, forlorn,
dare I say lost, not wishing to follow previous others who had explained without
a doubt all possible avenues of that check and particularly which ones didn't
work - I myself said the best bet was to head for Lincoln Center so he went into
the Park, came out again so we split the next couple of checks which I guess
actually weren't marked until the same thing happened again and I lost my well
paced running mate forever. I hear that we weren't the only callers in - It was
a bloody long and straight trail thereafter if you did it the way I did,
straight up Broadway, cause this run, not landing in a pub, was an extremely
good refresher in pub geography, cause of course, we didn't know that, even
though we came late cause real hashers don't look on the ground at the start for
ONINs (or they forgot to write it or something - good thing too - There's only
so much of Bwy you can take especially in the dark north. To continue my story -
when Jim got in we were downdowning on the roof admiring the view. So was he, so
he had to chug the beer he had just stepped on. OK, if he doesn't come back I'll
find you another one. But the ONIN was loads of fun - great homemade Shepherd's
Pie etc etc etc and the biggest living room I ever saw in New Amsterdam. A NIGHT
and a VENUE to remember. Thanks.
