Brooklyn Hash House Harriers History

The outer boroughs of New York (Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) have been hashed occasionally by visiting Hashes, typically New York City, New York (Westchester), Summit, and Rumson. But no Hash called any of them home until May 10th, 1993 when Keith Kanaga and Charles Dugan founded the Brooklyn Hash House Harriers. The main impetus for founding the BH3 was the establishment of the MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn, and Kanaga's transfer to MetroTech by The Chase Manhattan Bank. Nine years had elapsed since the founding of the NYCH3, the Greater Gotham Full Moon Hash had recently been founded with overwhelming success, and the time seemed ripe for expansion. Thus a pack of ten celebrated the inauguration of the third Hash in the New York City limits.

Each Hash develops its own character, and the BH3 has developed into a Hash which prizes short runs (45 minutes) and better beer. No bland, lawn mower beers on the BH3. Instead, the indigenous Brooklyn Lager, or some acceptable substitute (Bass, Anchor Steam, Pete's, or the like) is the standard beverage. BH3 also initiated the reporting of the On In bar to insure that excellence in hospitality is rewarded.

Currently BH3 runs every other Monday evening year 'round. There has been some discussion concerning the possible founding of a Queens Hash on the complementary Monday. Packs currently average fifteen.
