Brooklyn Hash House Harriers Run #202
July 10, 2000 Hare: Christine Hinz
Start: Borough Hall
On-In: Mooney's
Scribe: Lesley Brough
It was a fairly large group of hashers that gathered at one of
the many exits to the Borough Hall subway stop for the Brooklyn H3 on Monday
7/10. Christine Hinz was tonight's designated hare, and I, for one, am genuinely
happy when a resident Brooklynite chooses to hare the run. Not only do they know
the area, which tends to inspire one with a little confidence, but also they often
show you more interesting parts of the borough: areas that you never knew existed
(as well as ones you possibly never needed to know existed). But most important
of all, a native Brooklynite knows the borough's bars--a crucial aspect for any
hash. So the instructions were given, and we headed off in the direction of the
Promenade--always delightful on a summer evening and especially so this Monday
as there was still one tall ship left for our mutual perusal.
Then there was a check which was easily solved and it was off we went once more,
passing a church with an imploring "Feeling Rejected?" sign. Not belonging to
the Loser-Denomination (at least not today), I continued onwards with my hashing
buddies. Next we headed to Cadman Plaza and then on to the Brooklyn Polytechnic
Institute, or was it the Law School? Either way, it was some college of higher
learning and we ran
through it nonetheless. Not knowing Brooklyn too well, (NB. Brooklyn hare-raiser)
I really don't know where we went, but we ran at a swift pace, solving checks
briskly, zigzagging in and out of interesting neighborhoods--and even past the
abode of the veritable DB2. At this point an NYC JM (who shall remain nameless)
knowing that DB2 was out celebrating Mrs. DB2's birthday, decided that a mischievous
prank was in order and chalked 'On In #2B' on the sidewalk. Those of us in the
know chortled at the childish prank, but sometime later Sucks After Dark and Ewa
gained entry to the premises and began knocking on doors demanding to know if
a group of sweaty runners had recently been seen in or around #2B. Frightened
neighbors assured the two that if there was no barking, the DB2s were out and
thus sent SAD and Ewa back out on their merry way. Alice, was similarly confused,
but limited herself to politely ringing doorbells rather than accosting the weary
neighbors of the MIA DB2s. And from this point, despite Stephen's belief that
the On In was on 7th Avenue, it was a mere hop, skip and jump to the true On In
at Mooneys on Flatbush. And what a night for guest hashers it was. First, there
was the much-awaited arrival of a Mr. Neff, who was unknown to me, but obviously
an old-time hasher known to the Kanagas, Hardys and Stiefvaters of the Hash. Apparently
he is also credited with starting the West London Hash. An impressive feat indeed.
And then in walked new proud papa, Brent York, who apart from recently siring
a son, has been off in the depths of the Balkans for the past 6 months or so.
Welcome back to both. We also had a virgin, Alison, who seemed to enjoy herself,
despite having to return to the start to find the On In destination. Perhaps Stephen's
constant attempts at chatting her up were actually working? Down-downs were given
to the usual suspects: hare Christine, Paul for running his first ever half-marathon
in the Bronx the previous day, Peter for defacing the sidewalk, SAD, Ewa and Alice
for following his instructions, Mr. Neff, Brent as returnees and Alison the Virgin.
I'm sure there were probably a few others too, but I obviously wasn't paying sufficient
attention because I've since forgotten them. Apologies if you are one of them.
However, I do remember that the beer and pizza flowed and everyone seemed to be
having a good time. Hardy even complimented Christine on her run: the highest
possible accolade ever given to a hasher. So Christine, thanks for a good run
and a very enjoyable On In. On Out.
