BROOKLYN HASH HOUSE HARRIERS

Writeup, Run #164
Date: February 8, 1999

Hare: Geoff (Steamer) Baldwin

Start: 7th Avenue on the F.
On In: Carriage House, 7th Ave. and 8th St.

Scribe: Paul Ashlin

About 11 brave souls threw caution to the winds, and turned up for a Baldwin run on a cold February evening. It's always a gamble with a retired or currently not employed hare. They frequently spend the whole day setting a mini marathon. Of course DB2 always takes the day off to set his run, often with the same result.

The run started outside the Carriage House on 7th Ave. The hare had set very precise arrows from the platform inside the subway station. Would this be A to A, or would we use the pub opposite the Carriage House, or would Geoff take us to the Gate? Well, speculation time was over and DB2 had arrived, so we set off.

The trail took us back down into the subway where we ran underground up to 8th Avenue, hence the very precise arrows earlier. We appreciated the relative warmth of the subway. Of course the trail went up to 10th Avenue and Prospect Park, where we stumbled around a bit, and eventually found trail in the Park, which led us to Army Plaza.

At Army Plaza your scribe found trail two intersections around the Plaza. Gallantly I came back to within sight of the pack yelling On-On, but for some still unexplained reason they all ran down Flatbush. Oh well, F--k them I thought, they are probably short-cutting. I followed the trail, which after a few blocks turned left along Prospect and came to a check on Flatbush.

F--k them again I thought. They haven't marked the check. After eventually finding this trail which continued straight across Flatbush, I plodded on. At another unmarked check around 3rd Street and 6th Avenue, I headed incorrectly, down a full block towards the Gate. Those long blocks uphill between the Avenues are a bitch.

Assuming that I was the last of the pack I was surprised at the on-in at the Carriage House, to find that I was first in. Where are the others? asked Geoff. They eventually came in, including Pierre who of course had turned up late. F--k you they said to me. Why didn't you mark the checks?

Well the beer was good. Both joint masters were there for a change. Down-downs were administered to the hare and almost all others, including Stephen and Alice for being civilians. I am sure that Sucks got one. I can't remember why, but he usually gets a down-down on general principles. The pizza was a long time coming, and as I said the beer was good, so nobody seemed to mind.

Not more than a four-mile trail, well marked, maybe you do get wiser as you get older, Geoff!
