This was my first Brooklyn HHH run and it was a pretty good one . . . or am I supposed to say Shitty Trail, Shitty Trail? . . . The pack met in front of Circles Restaurant and the new Pavilion movie theater on a hot and humid summer night on the border of Park Slope, Brooklyn. One hasher, Mike (or Slow to Blow, as named in San Francisco -- we wonder what he had to do to get that name), yours truly, came just in time and had to change into running gear in Circles restaurant. The hare for the evening, Stephen, came in to get me just as I was exciting.
The hare warned us about the small arrows on the trail and pointed us down Prospect Park Southwest but we all got stumped by the large arrow outside the subway stop, which we later found out was the arrow signifying incoming hashers from the subway to where the meeting area was. The trail led us through the Windsor Terrace neighborhood, which included one back check. We soon entered Prospect Park near 11th Avenue where we encountered our first check. Only Mike followed the correct trail and yelled ON, ON to call the other hashers down to the lake. We then ran along the west side of the lake then up about 100 stairs to another check at the top of a densely tree populated hill. The correct trail then led down through an open meadow to road. We were now probably right in the center of the park -- luckily it was not a night run or flashlights would have been needed. The trail wound to a bridge where we had to climb and slide down a hill to a path bordering a stream. We stood and watched for several minutes 5 dogs run, jump and bathe in the stream [hashers?]. Afterwards we started running west on a paved road past the nature preserve all fenced up and under construction by the Park Service. We then ran through the large meadow, ran along the car roadway in the park and worked our way to the 9th Street park exit. Most hashers were all on trail at this point with some distance between them. The trail continued down to 8th Avenue where we entered the subway tunnel and ran to 7th Avenue where we exited. By this point maybe some wondered whether the On In would be at the same place -- The Carriage House -- as the previous hash. But that was not to be. The trail proceeded to 3rd Street and 7th Avenue, then down to 5th Avenue where the On In was -- the GATE.
Everyone came in within a 10-minute interval and we all proceeded to go outside to the outdoor drinking area. The joint masters, Jerry Fluffy Lockerman Nelson and John Cardinal O'Connor started the down downs. There were three newbies to the Brooklyn hash: David (from NYC Hash), Mike (Slow to Blow now from NYC hash), and Plunger (from NYC hash), who had to drink. Pierre had to drink a down down for peeing on trail. Our illustrious hare Stephen did a down down for admitting that he had new shoes, although only after much convincing. It was the fastest new shoe down down I have ever seen. He even took out the insole -- as I think he has done this before. The hashers later tried convincing our newbie Dave to set a trail in two weeks but to no avail -- he lives too far, he said. Janet me Slobodien [hey, I'm the only one allowed to call me "me" - janet] was briefing Mike Slow to Blow on the details of setting a trail and negotiating with the On In bars for a good deal on beers, and convincing me (it wasn't too hard) to write this summary. The bar was fully stocked with about 50 great beers from mainly around the tri-state area. Lo mein was the food for the evening and was chowed down with fair alacrity. Cheers!
