The instructions on the hotline were pretty clear. Start on 2nd Avenue between 82nd and 83rd and black attire must be worn. Which gave us two mysteries. Why were we meeting in the middle of the block on second and what’s with the black attire? Some vague connection to Friday 13th perhaps? The first little mystery was soon solved. The start was outside Ship of Fools. So, not just a run on the upper East Side, possibly the most boring hashing territory in the country, but an A to A to boot. How exciting! The second mystery was never explained. Why not? was the only explanation from hare Peter.

The trail went South, East, North for a bit and over to the river. Given that it was the upper East Side and we all knew where the on in was Peter decided to spice it up a little by semi hiding some of the checks and marks on corners. At one point most of the pack missed the hidden arrow taking the trail West from the river. They just kept running and joined the FRBs further down when we were checking from a check on York. The trail then headed over to the Park and a chicken eagle split on 5th Avenue. The eagle went into the Park and a few hashers decided to leave common sense behind and head into the pitch black of the Park. The more sensible ones headed up 5th following the instruction chalked on the sidewalk to proceed up to 82nd Street. In front of the Met a group of eagles heading south ran into a group of chickens running north. Both had run out of marks and nobody could find anything near the Met so we guessed Peter had run out of time setting the trail and we were meant to run back over to the on in. Peter claims there was a check in front of the Met. If there was, not a single hasher saw it.

It was a small pack so we were able to fit into the front part of the bar. Some good beers on tap including a Goose IPA. And for a change we didn’t have Pizza. Instead various deep fried things kept arriving from the kitchen as well as raw carrots and celery for the more health conscious.

As usual down downs were conducted by Jerry, the GGFM Brewmeister and the only officer that ever turns up. The joint masters, Andy and Betsy, haven’t been seen since the day they were elected and Curtis now resides on the West Coast. Actually Grand Mistress Marion did put in an appearance as a civilian late in the evening. Can’t remember what all the down downs were for. Lesley, who wanted to add a bit of interest to the trail, got one for marking the first check in the wrong direction thus screwing up late arrivals like Crofty and Ross. A virgin (Ellen?) was given a virgin down down for probably the fourth time. What she doesn’t realize is that they were in fact all different hashes. And she hasn’t turned up yet on either New Amsterdam hash.

And then we had the new hair. Ariane pitched up fresh from the beauty salon sporting a new hair do and looking like she was pursuing a new career in modeling. She was obviously into studying hair because she was the one that noticed that Pierre’s wasn’t as gray as usual. He was quick to point out that he doesn’t dye his hair. Rather he uses some stuff that returns hair to its natural color (same stuff they used in the movie There’s something about Mary?). Much discussion about the natural color being what it is now rather than what it was way back when. Using Pierre’s logic my natural age is 26 and my natural time for the mile is five minutes.

All in all a very good evening, a good run, a good on in and good fun winding up Pierre.

On on.
