For want of a better, or indeed any other, scribe, the hare's view will have to do. The old fart nearly got it right this time. With a wind chill in the low single digits, Fahrenheit, his first move was to take the start to 45th Street. Here was shelter and warm air from a building ventilation ;duct. Second hand it may have been, but it was preferable to the wintry blast two blocks north.
Two scouts came from a Japanese TV crew. They wanted to find out what we did, in preparation.for filming a run. This they did at the Brooklyn Polar Bear run, but apparently learnt nothing from their experience with New Amsterdam Winter Wednesday Hash.
A dozen foolhardy hashers set off westward along 45th Street, to a check at the Helmsley Building, with the threat of a long search in Grand Central Station. Some looked, more in search of warmth than the trail. This was not yet to be, as the trail went north up a wind swept Park Avenue. Then a right jink to the Inter-Continental and blessed relief! The trail went north through the lobby, jinked right and left to Lexington, then all through the Waldorf back to Park Avenue. A short slog to the north side of the cathedral and then several blocks of covered passages, many through heated buildings to a check on 57th and Madison.
One more piece of cover was northwards through the Four Seasons hotel and then on in to the Carriage House. A short trail with a decent amount of warmth for such a wintry day. Beer and food brought re-suscitation, but with a two month gap the trivialities of the downings have long since seeped through the BSE holes. For those who are curious, fart is an Aryan word which got corrupted into Greek as perdomai. Any Greek speakers?
