The old adage, “You can never have too much of a good thing,” was put to test on the first NYH3 Wednesday night run of the new millennium.  Wednesday’s run followed the Annual AGM Pub Crawl on Friday Night, the AGM on Saturday, the Recovery Run on Sunday, the Brooklyn Hash on Monday, and a Yankees (lost) baseball game surprise party for Lesley on Tuesday.  Those of us, about 25, that hadn’t had our fill of fun over the previous several days showed up for the start of this run at the corner of 23rd and 8th.

The hares, John “The Late Cardinal” O’Connor and Aleks Tkocz, gave an ever so slight chalk talk and sent us on our way west to 9th ave, north a few blocks and then over to the West Side Drive run/jog/bike path and our first check.   Making what turned out to be an uneducated guess, Mike Bahamonde, Andy, and yours truly headed south to a false about ½ a mile away.  The rest of the pack headed north on the true trail, which exited at the Javitz Center.  Another check awaited us in front of the Javitz Center, with the true trail heading north.  The trail eventually wove its way north and east and through the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  From here, we headed east to Time Square and another check that sent us south and eventually zig-zagged us towards, what I thought was going to be the on-in, Ellen O’Dees.  Not the case, as we then went south, now I was thinking, “Guinness at Paddy Reilly’s.”  Again wrong.

Somewhere in this area, after trailing the pack after guessing wrong at the check in Times Square, I came across Lesley.  Though another year older, not wise enough to figure out how to get the nail out of her shoe that she had recently picked up.  I, of course being the hero that I am, removed the wayward nail, preserving it for down-down fodder, and on we continued.  We eventually made our way to the On-In at Bar None.  Aleks, relieved that we made it to the On-In in a reasonable amount of time, commented that it must have been a good trail because we actually found the bar.

Bar None this evening was a perfect On-In location, LOUD music, the Knicks game on the tube with many fans out to cheer on the local team, and Kaoroke in the back.  After rehydrating ourselves with water on the sidewalk to avoid the noise, we made our way inside for the down-downs.  With newly anointed J.M. Peter “Actually Pulled Off a Surprise Birthday Party” Trunfio presiding, the hares were given their punishment for another “it sucked” trail.  Next up was Rebecca, who was given a “born-again” down-down due to her long absence from the hash.  She apparently has been away so long she forgot to wait for us to sing before she started drinking.  Then, first in Basil was called up, along with Lesley for forgetting to bring the rabbit ears, and me, for not calling Lesley to make sure she brought the ears.  Peter then invited Lesley (the lion) and I (the mouse) to stay up front for the Aesop’s Fable down-down for the nail incident.  Seems that I had suggested Lesley get a down-down for having a nail in her shoe and Lesley suggested I get a down-down for helping her out.  Peter, being the diplomat he is, offered us both down-downs.  Last but not least was the Asshole-of-the-Week award going to Mike “Foot Locker” Andanov for showing up at the On-In in a cab and not being smart enough to not have the cab pull up right in front of the bar with all of us standing outside. (Ed. Note:  And don’t forget that shirt!)

Soon after the usual pizza was served, we all engrossed ourselves with the Knicks game.  Since I had had so much “fun” the previous several days, I decided I needed to retire home at an early hour.  So any persons participating any good gossip events, occurring after I left are spared in this write up.  All in all, a decent start to the new season.

On-out.
