The year is 1626 a small group of Dutch settlers led by Peter Minuit meet with at local Indian tribe at a place called Shorskapock on the northern tip of an island that will be later called Manhattan. It is agreed that for beads worth $24 that they will sell what will later become the most valuable piece of real estate in the world.
Fast forward to the same site 152 years later. It is the year 1758 and Lord Cornwallas and a group of Hussein and English solders are camped near Shorskapock rock. It is a cold snowy November day. To survive the winter Lord Cornwallas orders the troops to cut down the local forest (the last original growth forest on the island) for firewood and housing.
It is 222 years later and a group of hashers meet near Shorskapock rock for the 747th run of the New York City hash. Because of global warming (caused by emissions and the burring of our woodlands) it feels like September. A group of about 30 including a reporter for the Times showed up. Roy Gilbert and Eva Mobius the hares sent us off into the wilds of Inwood Park, which has thankfully survived as the last natural second growth forest and wetland on the Island of Manhattan.
The trail gave us plenty of opportunity to commune with nature. It immediately went up hill, Rick in an effort to be noble turned his head to call back to a few lost souls and immediately did a Barry Cohen and ran into a tree. A few of the British ladies Annie and Julie were given shortcutting tips by Mr. Burke allowing them to avoid the off road adventure.
The trail eventually returned to a more conventional hash with a few easy checks and scenic vistas until we entered a work site and the crossed a bridge to the SOUTH BRONX. Actually the first neighborhood has decided to deny it is in the BRONX .It calls itself Riverdale but it was still the Bronx to us. A few checks later and the neighborhood became more Bronx like and there under the EL was our on in. The bar was an authentic BRONX bar (no Light, strange hostile regulars and a great jukebox). The bar did have decent beer and slow but good burgers for the hungry hashers.
Down downs were conducted for our Virgins Heather ,Christian and Bernie (a Scottish separatist) and Chris from the Times who will publish our actions for a few million people to read in the next few weeks. I’m sure this will help many of us from a career point of view.
Julie on a brief visit before she goes the Brazil was recognized for her lusty thanksgiving .She had been spotted on Thursday AM doing the "walk of shame" in her Wednesday eveningwear. Also on Friday she was spotted with a Leonardo look alike (maybe 18 years old Julie thinks he was 12) in close contact at a local bar.
Poor Jimmy in the third week of drying out wandered aimlessly around while the rest of us enjoyed the music the beer and the slow but good food. As the crowd tined out one of last weeks Virgins Gloria was honing her pick up skills with one of the new hashers. A small band including me decided to get a head start on new years and visit dive 96 before heading home to prepare for the real world of life and work in the city.
